A new law in New York will make it easier for snowmobilers to be ticketed for having too loud of a snowmobile, according to WGRZ.

New York's Gov. Andrew Cuomo has approved new standards for measuring noise and identifying sleds that can be ticketed for being too loud.

This gives police the ability to crack down after-market exhaust systems. Proponents believe it prompt more land owners to open their land to snowmobilers.

The New York State Snowmobile Association said to WGRZ some landowners have recently closed trails because of those illegal sled modifications.

A test developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers on muffler noise will be used when deciding on ticketing. This bill outlaws operating a snowmobile without a working muffler that keeps noise below 78 decibels at full throttle measured from 50 feet away. It also bans snowmobiles putting out 88 decibels at 4,000 rpm as measured from about 12 feet behind a stationary sled.

AmSnow recently reported in its' December issue that 50% of all noise is produced while riding a snowmobile can be attributed to track noise. Many people believe falsely that the vast majority of sound coming from a snowmobile is from the engine. This was true with the loud pipes of a couple decades ago. With advancements in engine technology and exhaust design technology, this is no longer the case. In addition, tracks create significant levels of vibration and harshness.
