MOOSE LAKE, Minn. -- Despite a weekend of up and down weather, from thunderstorms to sunshine, the racing at the IWA Racing Series season opener did not disappoint.
Fans who lined the shore of Moose Lake on Saturday were treated to a day of clean, fast racing. One of the most exciting moments happened when International Watercross Association (IWA) President and Pro Class racer Shawn Zurn showed us how to take a corner a little too tight, piloting his Ski-Doo 800 Mod over a course marker, which ejected him from the sled. Fortunately, Zurn left the incident with only a few cuts and bruises.
Sunday is always finals day, which means that it's time to put on your game face. The 121 Ski-Doo of Mike Simmons had a close call with the 442 Ski-Doo of Brian McCurdy. Simmons slammed into a wave, sinking his sled in a corner. McCurdy, hot on his tail, narrowly avoided Simmons but got caught up with his sled before it was also fully submerged.
The Women's Oval class continues to grow every year, and Sunday's final resulted in two rookies (Kelsey Lang and Jenny McPheeters) taking the second- and third-place trophies.
