It was the second weekend in July and we were off to the Flat Rock Inn in Lowville, N.Y., for the second event of the New York State Water Cross Association (NYSWCA). This weekend was offering different types of racing and one very special event. There would be drags and ovals on both days and the special event was scheduled for Sat. The weather was looking good and the racers were ready for great weekend.

This special event is the second annual Garrett Miller Memorial Race. It’s not so much a race as it is a ‘Last Man Standing’ endurance event. All the participants get one gallon of gas in their sled then they all line up along the edge of the pond. The event is to honor Garrett Miller, who passed away from Cystic Fibroses in February 2014 at the age of 15. Garrett was a true outdoor enthusiast, he loved everything to do with the outdoors like hunting, snowboarding and of course snowmobiling. He was always a joy to have around and willing to help in any way he could. He was a student at South Lewis Central School and an honorary member of the Constable Fire Department.

This race is used to raise money for the Garrett Miller Scholarship Fund for the South Lewis Central School. This year they raised around $1,500. The family also does several other events to raise money in his name.

So back to the racing; this year’s event had 44 participants sign up for the event unfortunately only 42 made it. This was our first time witnessing this event, and what a spectacle to watch 42 sleds on the water at the same time! This event was started by Gordon Yancy, owner of the Flat Rock Inn, who was very close to Garrett. This year’s event was won by Pete Cowen, and he was very happy to win the trophy and take part in this great event.

The next event for the NYSWCA is scheduled for Aug 8-9 and is the championship weekend.
