Matt Schulz (Wausau, Wis.) took the checkered flag on Sunday at the Eagle River Derby Track to claim the World Championship win.
Schulz beat out Nick Van Strydonk (2nd) and defending champion Cardell Potter (3rd) for his second WC win, his first since 2010.
The frigid sub-zero temps did little to cool the action on the track. A few racers even got a little hot under their helmets when a red flag created some controversy on the last lap of the first leg of the race. Schulz had completed the first 10-lap portion of the race in first place just before the mandatory pit stop, however, the red flag crash occurred before all racers had completed their 10th lap. This led to mass confusion among race officiants, spectators and drivers on how to restart the race. The eventual ruling was to essentially omit the last half a lap or so form the first leg of the race. If you're confused, don't worry, you're not alone!
The final 20 laps of the race were restarted as they normally would after the pit stop, and Schulz held off a strong field to take the victory.
