Clean Snowmobile Challenge to run on Iso-butanol

$

The 15th Annual SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge will be held March 3-8, 2014 in Houghton, Mich at Michigan Technological University. This year the challenge will be to engineer a sled that runs on bio-isobutanol.

Much like ethanol, bio-isobutanol can be blended with gasoline to make a clean burning fuel. However, the energy content of bio-isobutanol is higher than ethanol blends. The process of making bio-isobutanol is different, requiring a different fermentation yeast and process. Existing ethanol plants can be converted to make this fuel. The EPA has approved this fuel as an additive to gasoline. Lead organizer of the SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge, Jay Meldrum said, “This is a good experiment for the teams to undertake. Each year we change the game a little to keep it fresh. We have tried flex-fuel ethanol, high content ethanol (E85), and even bio-diesel fuels.” Gage Products from Ferndale, Mich. will once again be the fuel supplier for CSC providing all the fuel for every team and every event.

The Challenge each year is to engineer a snowmobile that is clean and quiet and still fun to drive. The sleds must pass Lab Emissions, a pass-by noise test, a 100 mile Endurance Run, Acceleration and

Handling tests. Teams must write a technical paper and defend their design with a presentation. The week-long event ends with an awards banquet on Saturday where the winner is crowned the cleanest and quietest snowmobile of the year. Cash prizes and trophies are awarded to teams for each category.

The Senate in Wyoming passed its first hurdle February 25 in increasing the snowmobile registration fee by $10, according to the Wyoming Star Tribune.

The bill was passed by a 4-1 vote in the Senate Travel, Recreation, Wildlife and Cultural Resources Committee.

If it passes the floor and is signed by Gov. Matt Mead, registration will cost $35 for individuals.

Lobbyists for the Wyoming State Snowmobile Association and Snowy Range Snowmobile Club attended the meeting and said members wanted to pay more for better trail maintenance.

Snowmobilers who only use private land would not be effected by the bill.

Wisconsin snowmobile registrations increase

Wisconsin snowmobile registrations are up this year compared to last season, according to the Department of Natural Resources.

The Wis. DNR reported, to WSAW.com, that in Vilas County alone there were an additional 300 registrations compared to last year.

In early February there were 222,690 registered snowmobiles in the state, according to a report from the DNR.

"The entire state is enjoying a winter of snow, which is a bit different from previous winters where the snow depth was quite different from north and south, or east and west," Department of Natural Resources Secretary Cathy Stepp said. "Here in Wisconsin we are lucky in that we have snowmobile organizations who take the time to care for these trails - and landowners who grant permission for trails to cross their acres."

Getting back on the sled

 By Lane Burnham

As a young rider I have been threw the struggles and the easy points in ridding. About 8 years ago I was a crash breaking my back and losing a kidney along with liver failure. On my ride to the hospital I could hear the paramedics saying they were unsure if I was going to make it. After a few tests and some blood work the doctors came to me and said there was a 13% chance I will ever walk again in my life. I couldn’t live life this way I knew I would walk again no questions asked. After my release I worked and worked on moving my feet and legs and bending my back.

After about 5 months, I could walk “not for long” but I could do it. Then I could run “like the wind” It was a miracle. At that moment in my life I felt I was ready to ride again. That year for my birthday my parents bought me snowmobile. I had never owned my own sled before. I was so pumped but very scared it would happen again. I would sit outside and start the sled and look it while it would run in the yard.” One night when I was watching television show about riding sleds in the mountains.

I realized that I want to be just like that. I want to ride just like that. The next morning I reached for my pull cord and started my sled. After a minute or two I closed my eyes and stepped onto my sled. As I touched the throttle I opened my eyes and smiled. I had done it I beat my worst fear. It has now been eight years and I am more confident on a sled than my two feet.

I encourage everyone out there that has or may someday have an accident to push their self. If you push up and beyond you could be a survivor like me.

To bring their already solid trail sled lineup to the next level for their 60th anniversary Polaris celebrated with the largest trail and crossover sled launch EVER! The biggest news was the engineering of the new Axys chassis. Polaris says the goal of this new chassis was devised to “raise the bar in control, performance and comfort. The Axys chassis is 93% all new design.

The Axys has a much larger ‘sweet spot’ and should accommodate even more riding styles than the Rush. The earlier Pro-R (Rush) chassis was slightly more directed towards big bump riders and had a smaller demographic that really used it to the fullest potential. The new Axys will come in two variations for the trails including the Pro-S and Pro-X. The Pro-S is where 95% of us riders should be looking to buy. The boys at Polaris tell us that unless all you do is hit big jumps, road approaches, logs, monster moguls or are on the snocross track, you should be on a Pro-S.

Underneath the Axys is the new Pro-XC suspension. It looks slightly similar to the Rush with a slightly exposed rear shock on the top of the tunnel but the bell crank is 2.5-inches more to the rear and the torque arm is 5-inches rearward. The new suspension gives 33% more front shock travel and is 13 lbs. lighter. Oh yeah, and the Axys is 38 lbs lighter than the current Pro-R Rush 800!

The Axys also comes with an all new Cleanfire 800cc High Output engine. There are new 3-stage electronic exhaust valves, high-flow intake and exhaust, new crankshaft, electronic oil pump, coolant bypass, and engine mounts, just to name a few upgrades. The new lightweight low-inertia crank is 2.5lbs. lighter and has 25% less inertia for better acceleration and has been proven in Polaris’ snocross sleds for some time. The new engine is 38 pounds lighter than the previous CFI 800 motor and we are told that it provides a 15% better power to weight ratio, so the new Axys chassis with this motor in it should be absolutely wicked-fast.

The longer and more utility oriented Indy Voyageur 144 also made it back into the line for 2015 including the 550 fan and 600 liquid sleds. However, new for 2015 is a long 155-inch Indy Voyageur with a 1.6-inch lugged Cobra track. The fun didn’t stop there as Polaris introduced a long 550 Indy Adventure 155-inch sled too. Like the Voyageur, the Adventure has the articulated rear suspension, tow hitch, extreme bumper and tall shield, but also has a 1+1 seat, cargo rack and saddlebags, mirrors, and additional wind protection.

With so much time, energy and resources going into the Axys platform the RMK and Indy lines are kind of taking a break this year, but Polaris is letting you build your mountain sled now to your specific liking for Snowcheck. Tracks, rails, bars, decals, tunnel, suspension and more can now be customized.

We also had the opportunity to see the new fully integrated Polaris RiderX phone/computer Application technology vision first hand, and the goal is to connect the rider.

Connect to what? Social media, your phone, GPS, your sled, dealers, routes, clubs, destinations and basically whatever you can think of! The biggest benefit of this new App is being able to plan, track, and share where you ride. RiderX is an app that can help you find a new snowmobile route, access a previously planned or completed ride, find gas/food/lodging or locate the nearest dealer. Polaris has worked with clubs, vendors, and the government to map over 80% of the trails in the U.S. and that number is increasing daily.

Zach Herfindahl wins Warroad Pro Stock

Christian Brothers Racing’s Zach Herfindahl won his third Pro Stock race of the season at Warroad, Minn.

Last week’s champ, Aaron Christensen (Pol), kept up his late season surge landing in the runner-up spot.

Mother Nature has not cast a favorable glance on USXC events, except, of course, for the ample snow cover. With temps forecast in the -20 range, USXC officials decided late in the week to push the start time of the Warroad race back to 10 AM.

“In the end you have to worry about safety, not only for the racers, but also for the race crew. Cross country racing is about battling the elements, but everything has its limits,” USXC owner Brian Nelson said.

Wesley Selby was able to crank out a nice third place Pro Stock finish, albeit in a limited field of racers. Absent were pros Brian Dick (Cat), Ryan Simons (Cat), and Ross Erdman (Doo). Trying to make a return to competition, Bobby Menne (Pol) was not able to finish the Speedwerx Pro Open class. Menne suffered a broken foot at the Duluth National Snocross and, as a result, his season has turned out to be almost a complete washout.

The Semi-Pro and Amsoil Semi-Pro classes have been a battleground all season, as well. In the constant buffet of winners in the class, Alex Hetteen (Pol) was able to snatch a close-to-home victory, besting Timmy Kallock (Cat) in Semi-Pro and Dillan Dohrn (Doo) in the Open class. Always right there, Cale Anseeuw (Doo) logged a third place finish in Semi-Pro, while Lance Efteland (Cat) grabbed the same in the Open. Hetteen’s first decides nothing in the Semi-Pro points battle, as one point separates Hetteen from Anseeuw and Casey Pries (Cat) and Jon Arneson (Cat) are only 15 and 18 points back of first. That should make for an exciting final weekend for the Semi-Pro competitors.

Running away with all but round one, Jolene Bute (Cat) felt a little heat in the On Snow Magazine Women’s class, with Jill Tangen and Anne Pladson within 18 seconds of the top finishing Bute. Another revolving door, the Drift Super Stock class has been largely a matter of who shows up at any given race. Saturday, yet another winner, Joseph Wood (Cat), had his name recorded in the books. That brings the Super Stock total to six different winners in seven rounds of competition, with only Jon Arneson posting more than one win in the class.
The USXC season finale is up next in Walker, MN with the Moondance Jam 100, March 8. The race will be followed by the year-end awards banquet. Also on the schedule for the final weekend is round two of the mini 120 races, with the Mini-250. Visit www.usxcracing.com for more information.

Keith Curtis sweeps Afton Hillclimb

Keith Curtis won all five Pro Men’s classes in which he competed as well as two King of the Hill run-offs at RMSHA's Afton Hillclimb.

Polaris Pro Men won all four Stock classes, all four Mod classes, and two Improved Stock classes as they claimed 21 of 36 available podium positions at Afton.

Polaris racers won all three Amateur classes, won the Juniors class, and won a Semi-Pro class and the Semi-Pro King of the Hill title. Plus, Polaris racers won two of three Women’s classes and the Queen of Queens title.

Pro Men are allowed to enter five classes at each RMSHA event, and while Polaris racers have often won multiple classes on a weekend, winning all five classes is extremely rare.

Keith Curtis achieved a pure sweep at Afton, winning the finals in all five classes in which he was entered and both King of the Hill run-offs. Curtis won the 600 Stock, 800 Stock, 1000 Stock, 800 Mod, and Open Mod class titles. He then won the Stock King title on his 1000 Stock sled, and won the Mod King title on his 800 Mod sled. Curtis said it was the fourth time in his career he had achieved such a sweep at an RMSHA hillclimb.

Polaris racer Erin Beukelman won the 1000 Improved Stock and 700 Mod classes, finished second in 800 Improved Stock, and was second in the Improved King of the Hill competition.

Also winning class titles on their Polaris sleds were Brandon Titensor in 600 Improved Stock, Cole Willford in 600 Mod, and Luke Rainey in 700 Stock.

In dominating the podium throughout the finals, Polaris racers finished 1-2 in five classes – 600, 700 and 1000 Stock, and 800 Mod and Open Mod – and they finished 1-2 in the Mod King of the Hill runs.

Along with his 700 Stock victory, Rainey reached the podium three more times with two seconds and a third, and he finished second in the Stock King of the Hill runs.

Polaris racer Jesse Hotchkiss won the Semi-Pro Improved class, then won the Semi-Pro King of the Hill contest. Andy Thomas finished second in Semi-Pro Stock and Semi-Pro Mod.

In the Women’s classes, Kaycee Balls won the Women’s Mod class, while Shelley Heap won Women’s Improved, finished second in Women’s Stock, and won the Queen of Queens run-off.

Polaris hillclimbers swept the Amateur classes, with Tanner Meyers winning the Stock class, Justyn Heater taking first in Improved and Kameron Devish winning the Mod class. Chet Marshall reached the podium twice, finishing second in Stock and Mod.

Polaris racers finished 1-4 in the Junior class as Tanner Meyers won and was followed, in order, by Jaden Cook, Brock Sharp, and Tristan Spencer.

The next event on the RMSHA schedule will be the White Pine Hillclimb at Pinedale, Wyoming, March 8-9.

Ski-Doo releases 2015 snowmobiles

The phrase, ‘Don’t hate the player; hate the game’ comes to mind as Ski-Doo once again showed the amount of innovation and just plain ‘wow factor’ that it takes to be the industry leader.

Headlining MY2015’s class of sleds is the new Ski-Doo Summit X 174. A first of its kind 174-inch mountain carving track is sure to turn more than a few heads! With the 3-inch lug, you might be able to ride through the ozone on a cloudy day.

And what isn’t new for 2015 on the Renegade line? This crossover group sees the addition of the ultimate X-RS race package (excuse us while we wipe the drool from our chin!) It was a no-brainer for the folks in Valcourt to bring more rider-specific longer-tracked packages to the crossover market. Not only have they brought the race-oriented X-RS package (Spring Buy only) to this category, but they’ve added new features on several models including handguards, handlebar controls, intelligent Throttle Control and new colors.

What more could you want? I’ll tell you! The MX Z has been one of the most popular consumer buys for many years, a bread and butter sled for Ski-Doo, and for good reason. There’s a new RAS 2 front suspension on select REV-XS packages including the TNT, and Spring Buy X-RS and X models. Both Spring Buys come with 800R or 600 H.O. E-TEC engine options. The X adds an option for the 1200 4-TEC with a new primo handle bar control in the REV-XR chassis with HPG Plus R front shocks and KYB Pro 36 shocks in the rear.

The GSX remains the premium trail duster it’s known as. The LE version adds the option of the rotating throttle control in its 900 ACE package, while stepping up the SE brings you the option of the 800R E-TEC and a new premium handle bar control and platinum/satin coloration.

Ski-Doo has developed a next-generation RAS 2 front suspension. This newest evolution in an already strong front suspension gives riders improved straightline precision in big bumps and less roll in corners. Oh, and it’s lighter weight, too!

Another Ski-Doo industry innovation in 2015 is the finger throttle. Introduced on the 600 and 900 ACE engines, the throttle control is able to rotate 360 degrees around the handlebar. Advertised as a finger throttle, it really gives the rider a fully customizable throttle for whatever position is most comfortable.

2015 also brings a much needed improvement to the DESS (Digitally Encoded Security System) key. I’m sure we’re all familiar with the ‘beep, beep’ chirp of a Ski-Doo when the key is not properly in place on its post. A new ball-in-socket design creates a ‘no-doubt’ proper connection and increased security with an RF chip and unique coding system to start each sled. As one Ski-Doo engineer put it, “No more beeping!” On behalf of the industry, we say “Thank you!”

Exclusive! Summit X T3 174 First Impression

Summit 1AmSnow’s Western Editor, Stephen Clark, had first crack at the new Ski-Doo Summit X T3 174. And he’s been nothing but impressed with the capabilities of the first-of-its-kind 174-inch tracked mountain masher!

“We really put the 174 through its paces today in some of the deepest, wettest snow I’ve ever ridden in,” said Clark, “Pretty incredible what this thing will do.”

Built on the REV-XM platform, the Summit X T3 174 incorporates industry leading innovation embracing the lightweight performance needed for shredding serious POW! Most noticeable on this sled is the unimaginable 174-inch track length equipped with a 3-inch paddle spinning around the tMotion rear suspension with new lightweight parts.

Summit 2Upfront, the T3 package brings in the new RAS 2 front suspension finished off with Ski-Doo’s new Pilot DS 3 skis. A new lightweight muffler and optimized heat exchangers improve performance while shedding pounds! The combination of weight-saving steps taken by Ski-Doo engineers in the T3 package is amazing. They’ve managed to create a 174-inch machine weighing the same as a 163-inch machine without sacrificing performance.

All this has greatly improved the sled’s climbing ability and the amount of flotation is amazing. The rider can carry less momentum into difficult situations and ride away without getting stuck. Photos by Levi Tomanen.

Nine sleds cross Clean Snowmobile Challenge finish line

This year's SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge had a record of nine sleds crosssing the finish line on March 4, according to Michigan Technological University's website.

“I’m amazed and pleased that we had this many teams finish,” said Jay Meldrum, lead organizer of the Challenge.

There are normally only six sleds that can compete in the 100-mile event.

Ten teams started the Endurance Run. Student drivers run several laps on the winter test track at Michigan Tech’s Keweenaw Research Center before heading north on snowmobile trails to Copper Harbor, Michigan’s northernmost community.

None of the snowmobiles were forced out by mechanical failures. One team, Northern Illinois University, had to withdraw after accidentally departing from the marked course and stopping, a violation of Endurance Run rules.

The successful teams were the University of Wisconsin–Madison, the University of Wisconsin–Platteville, the University of Idaho, Ecole de Technologie Superieure, Michigan Tech, the State University of New York at Buffalo, North Dakota State University, the University of Minnesota Duluth and Kettering University.

Most sleds were running on an undisclosed cocktail of gasoline and isobutanol, a biofuel made from corn. A couple successful entries, however, were using a biodiesel blend, including the team from SUNY Buffalo. “I think we’ll do well on fuel economy,” said driver Noor Jariri, adding that a check of the fuel tank revealed it was still nearly full.

“It was excellent,” said Professor Emeritus Bill Shapton, an early advocate for SAE collegiate design competitions like the Clean Snowmobile Challenge. “We had a perfect day, and everybody made it. The quality of the snowmobiles has really gone up, and I’m very proud of the students.”

On Saturday, March 8, the Polaris Acceleration Event begins at 10 a.m., followed by the Polaris Handling Event at 11 a.m. In addition, the Challenge's battery-powered, zero-emissions entries will undergo their Acceleration and Load Test at 11 a.m. All three events are open to the public and are held at the Keweenaw Research Center Test Course.

2015 - The Coolest of What's Coming

$

The AmSnow team just returned from five days of riding, evaluating and photographing the 2015 sleds. Here are our top coolest things that are coming for 2015!

YamahaYamaha climbs the mountains. By introducing the Viper M-TX available in a 162-inch and 153-inch track, Yamaha has announced it believes its 3-cylinder 4-stroke Genesis engine can be a player in the mountain segment. While they’ve not made the dry-weight of the sled public knowledge, they’ve assured us the weight differential between 2-stroke and 4-stroke mountain sleds is closer than ever before. You know we’ll be trying to dig up that info for you during our demo rides next season!

In the trail and crossover segments, Yamaha has pushed for improved handling and more options across their lineup. New Limited Edition models, deep-keel Tuner skis, and YMC’s performance damper kit are all steps to improve their rides. The new coloring options were the topic of much debate out west, too!

Arctic Cat

Arctic Cat is betting big on expanding their 600cc C-TEC2 engine. We pretty much knew this was going to happen after such a successful debut in the trail segment. After having the chance to ride several of the new 6000 models over the past week, I think this will be a big success for Cat. It provides a wider entry point for newer riders that was absent last season.

I think it’s also worth mentioning that Arctic Cat introduced a 4-stroke mountain sled in the M7000 as well. The fact that two of the four OEM’s believe it’s a competitive option worth building is saying something. Check out the all new Pro-Tour chassis too!

Polaris out-did themselves with the new Axys Pro S model sleds. Both the 600 and 800 in the short-track and 136-inch Switchback versions flat out work in the trails. Polaris is going to sell a lot of these sleds and may bring back market share from #1 Ski-Doo to the red Polaris brand. Polaris has made it no secret they’ve set their sights on overtaking Ski-Doo as the No. 1 snowmobile manufacturer.

PolarisAlso, the new 800 Cleanfire engine from Polaris is just as strong and fast, if not faster than the other 800s on the market. We put several 800 Polaris machines side-by-side with their competitors and Polaris proved that their new 800 will run with everything that is out there. Axys’ 93-percent new chassis with PRO-XC rear suspension and rider-centric comfort and technology is Polaris’ best shot fired yet.

Ski-Doo’s RAS 2 front suspension. You know Ski-Doo isn’t going to give up any ground to another OEM without a fight. The new RAS 2 front suspension for 2015 can be interpreted as their version of an Ali counterpunch. It flattens out cornering like you wouldn’t believe and is a huge improvement in big bump control. We didn’t think the X-RS could get any better, but it has, and now there is a 137-inch long Renegade X-RS too! We were smitten before riding it and in love after riding it.Ski-Doo

It’s clear Ski-Doo and Polaris, the two heavyweights, are just getting ready to rumble! Only good things can come to us riders from this brawl… “Fight! Fight! Fight!”

Eagle River, Wis. trails open to March 31

Eagle River, WI trails will be open until March 31. Trail conditions were good as of March 10.

The snow is very deep everywhere.  The base is 24+ inches and more of hard frozen snow with plenty of loose snow on top.  Fresh snow is continuing to fall which is great for everyone.

At the road crossings in some areas the snow banks are really high.  Do double duty on looking for vehicles on the roads. You might want to literally stand up and look left and right.

The Catfish Lake Loop and Eagle Lake Trail are marked with orange barrels.
Plenty of snow.  Stay by the barrels.  Don't ride anywhere on a lake that is not marked as a trail.  It's a been noted that with the righteous winds we've been getting there is a big heave in the middle of Eagle Lake.  It's a launcher, so slow down and be extra cautious.  The ruts, drifts and the ice heave are hard to see, especially at night.  Don't be a hero.  It's not worth it.

At night there is a 55 mph speed limit on all snowmobile trails.

Wednesday rides are continuing to be very popular this season.  New this season is a Tuesday ride.

National Straightline Snowmobile Racing wrapped up the  NSSR 2014 Super Series at Green Lake in Spicer, Minn.

Temperatures ranged from a 0 to +25 degrees F with a light breeze of about 5 to 8 mph from the Southwest during the day. The 1000 foot shaved ice track was aimed to the North and just a little East.

Nearly 100 racers entered this stop on the series. Nearly 500 passes on the 3000 foot shaved ice track took place.
The track was smooth as glass and the top speed contenders were out of the gate early. Mike Graham of Faribault, MN set the mark early at a 152.12  mph on his Super Mod four cylinder two-stroke on a small amount of Nitrous Oxide built by Heavy Metal Customs/ProLine Performance. Brad Cone of Fairmont brought out the big iron by OSP/Yamaha to bump up the mark to a 156.68 mph pass. Tyde Berg of Spicer jumped on to run his 1100 Open Mod, all naturally aspirated machine, to a nice pass of 148.02 mph. Dave “Super Dave” Borchert came out to lay down a pass of 144.44 mph on his turbo Yamaha to keep the need for speed alive!

Mike Martin of Galesburg, Ill. showed up on his OSP/Yamaha for Martin Racing and made an amazing pass of 162.57 mph to capture Top Speed and to take home the $500 Cash Prize sponsored by Minneapolis Oxygen and the four foot high Top Speed Trophy!

At the Awards Presentation held at Zorbaz on the Lake, the sponsorships of Spicer Sports, Willmar Motor Sports, and Tracks USA provided for a drawing at $400 of eight each $50 bills for all the First Place Class Winners! Needing to be present to win kept it interesting.

This NSSR Event in Spicer, MN was hosted by the Smokin Joe Shimota and Bill Dickerson of the Spicer Sno-Skippers Snowmobile Club and was held on Green Lake.  Also, a big thanks to the Spicer Volunteer Fire Department for the EMT’s, the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office, and the Minnesota DNR, New Ulm Office. These folks worked hard in the One Week Notice to secure the necessary permits to make this happen – that is what you call customer service!

The awards banquet will take place on Saturday, April 5, 2014 in Otsego, Minn.

San Marino Racing announce it will compete in 2014 NHRA Div 1 Ultimax Belts ProStock Snowmobile Series and on a limited schedule in the 2014 Mello Yello NHRA  Prostock Motorcycle class .

In preparation for the historic NHRA Gatornationals at Autoplus Raceway in Gainesville, Florida;  team pilot Brian Pretzel will renew his PSM license this off season aboard a Suzuki prepped from Gann Speed Shop. Hibbert wins Friday's Pro open at Buffalo River Race Park

Tucker Hibbert won Friday's Pro Open class at the U.S. Air Force Snocross at Buffalo River Race Park (BRRP).

And in Pro Lite racing Corin Todd (Leighton Motorsports/Polaris) not only won Friday’s main event, he also took over the series point lead from Andrew Carlson.

Pro Open

Hibbert started in the middle of the front row – selecting the shortest distance to the Stud Boy Holeshot line. A risky move given the proximity of the rest of the field on the season’s longest and fastest start to date, Hibbert was quick off the draw and his Arctic Cat sled responded – launching him out to an early lead that he’d never give up.

“The track was different, different than it’s been in the past. But it’s fun to change it up, like we’ve been doing each week. I’m pumped to do well here so close to home, and looking forward to sleeping in my own bed tonight," Hibbert said.

The sentimental favorite at BRRP tonight had to be Ross Martin (DuPont/Jack Links/Polaris). The Wisconsin-based racer had been on the sidelines for the last several races with an injured shoulder, but rallied back to qualify in 4th place and raced even better in the finals – 2nd behind Hibbert.

“Second place tonight feels like a win right now,” said Martin. “There’s always a little doubt, but it feels great to be up here and I’m looking forward to racing at Lake Geneva (Wis.) next weekend.”

With Hibbert up front early thanks to a couple blistering laps (2 & 3), Arctic Cat’s Cody Thomsen and LaVallee Racing/Polaris’ Kyle Pallin put on an excellent show for the third and final podium spot early – a battle eventually won by Thomsen, who’d hold on to the third and final podium spot.

As Hibbert and Martin continued to break away from the rest of the pack (Hibbert up nine seconds on Martin, Martin up 3.5 seconds on Thomsen), Christian Brothers Racing/Arctic Cat’s Logan Christian came barreling in to challenge Pallin. Another hometown racer, Christian (4th), would race to 4th place at the checkers while teammate David Joanis (Royal Distributing/Arctic Cat) rounded out tonight’s Pro Open top five.

Pro Lite

Wrestling the lead from holeshot winner James Johnstad (Judnick Motorsports/Polaris) on the opening lap, Corin Todd would click off a Pro Open-worthy 42.9-second lap (on lap two) and opened up a lead he’d never relinquish.

“You get a 2nd or 3rd place start, put yourself in good position because I knew I had to make my move early,” said Todd. “It’s easier that way, at the start of the race, because we’re all grouped close together.”

With the win Todd overcame an eight-point deficit heading into tonight’s Pro Lite final to Andrew Carlson (Carlson Motorsports/Polaris) – and now leads Carlson by one point in the overall class chase, 473-472.

Qualifying 1st and placing 2nd in tonight’s Pro Lite final was Team LaVallee/Polaris’ Andrew Lieders. Lieders rode a solid race, keeping pace with Todd – but unable to mount any sort of serious chase on the 1st place position in the 11-lap contest.

Johnstad would remain up front, about equal distance back for Lieders (that Lieders was to Todd, roughly two seconds). And passing Carlson late in the contest for 4th place – and thus insuring the point lead for Todd – was 2nd place qualifier John Stenberg (Team Bauerly/Ski-Doo). Carlson would round out the top five.

Ross Martin wins Saturday's Pro Open at Fargo

Ross Martin won Saturday's Pro Open in Glyndon, Minn. at U.S. Air Force Snocross at BRRP / Fargo.

Joining Martin on the winner’s stand on Saturday at BRRP – and completing the weekend 1st/1st sweep in the Pro Lite class – was Corin Todd (Leighton Motorsports/Polaris).

Pro Open

“The Boss is back!,” bellowed longtime ISOC race announcer Mike Schroeder as Martin (aka “Ross the Boss”) pumped his fist over the finish line jump, triggering the massive fire pots atop the finish structure and queuing the fireworks display for one of the larger crowds AMSOIL Championship Snocross has enjoyed this season.

Martin, who placed 2nd in Friday’s main event and qualified in 4th position today, chose to start more on the outside line to the Stud Boy Holeshot. The move paid off as, when it looked like Hibbert had the angle on being the first racer out of the opening corner, the defending champ was clipped in the rear of the sled by Kamm – at peak speed – which caused a chain reaction crash that also collected No. 2 qualifier Kyle Pallin (LaVallee Racing/Polaris) and Hentges Racing/Polaris’ Justin Broberg.

“I could clearly see what was going to happen (at the start), so I just ducked under and made it through,” said an elated Martin from the podium. “This is going to go down as one of my best wins of all-time.”

Questionable as to if he was even going to boot up and race today (nagging shoulder injury), Martin gutted it out and rode strong, fast and mistake-free to the 7.5 second victory over 2nd place, local Logan Christian (Christian Brothers Racing/Arctic Cat).

After the mess at the start, Hibbert was able to remount – in dead last place – and mount a bit of a charge. His effort would run into another issue when he and fellow Arctic Cat pilot Cody Thomsen got together (lap four), sending Hibbert off his sled for the second time. To his credit Hibbert was able to remount and rode a solid remainder of the race, inheriting a top five finish when Scheuring Speed Sports/Ski-Doo’s Lincoln Lemieux (3rd place at the time) crashed while battle for the final podium spot with Christian Brothers Racing’s David Joanis (Royal Distribution/Arctic Cat). Thomsen would round out the podium in 3rd with a great race and his second podium of the weekend, with Joanis in 4th and Hibbert in 5th.

Hibbert still maintains a pretty much insurmountable lead in the Pro Open points chase, 594-474 over Kamm.

 Pro Lite

All systems were ‘Go’ for Andrew Carlson (Carlson Motorsports/Polaris) to open Saturday’s Pro Lite final at Buffalo River Race Park. The Pro Lite overall point leader coming into Fargo pulled the holeshot and as leading when disaster struck and Carlson dropped from 1st to 9th.
Taking advantage of the situation was Friday’s winner, Corin Todd, who got into Carlson in the third corner of the first lap.

“The point race was tight and I got together with Andrew (Carlson) and, unfortunately, he came off the sled,” said Todd. “But I came in here this weekend having to take over the points lead and I did.” Note: After Fargo Todd leads Carlson now by ten points, 517-507 with one weekend of racing remaining.

Following the Todd/Carson get together – which could very well have played a major role in deciding this year’s Pro Lite championship – Todd would get a quick challenge from John Stenberg (Team Bauerly/Ski-Doo), who actually took the race lead from Todd on lap two – but crashed just moments after grabbing the lead.

Opening the third lap up front, Todd never looked back. With Stenberg down, moving into 2nd place was another Friday Pro Lite podium finisher at Fargo, James Johnstad (Judnick Motorsports/Polaris). Both Todd and Johnstad separated from the pack, with Travis Muller (Warnert Racing/Ski-Doo) diving into 3rd place.

Todd would check out midway through the race, while Carlson did the best he could to move up from 9th to 6th place with several laps still remaining.

Holding the 4th and 5th positions were a couple Michigan racers, Zak Mason (Leighton Motorsports/Polaris) and Ski-Doo mounted Kevin Wallenstein (Ingels Performance). And when the white flag flew Todd had seven seconds on Johnstad, who was in a furious battle with Muller for the 2nd position. Todd would cruise to victory, completing the weekend sweep and Johnstad held off Muller, with Mason and Wallenstein holding down the 4th and 5th positions, respectively, while early race leader Carlson managed to rally back to 6th.
