It was the first weekend in June and we were off to Roscoe, N.Y., for a snowmobile event. Snowmobile event you say? Yes! It was the 2nd annual Delaware Valley Ridge Riders (DVRR) watercross event, put on with the help of North East Watercross (N.E.W.). Unlike last year's event, which featured both watercross and grass drags, there would only be watercross racing, but the DVRR were still hoping for a huge turnout.
On Friday, the N.E.W. racers started to roll in ready to get wet (or not!). Warren McKeel and Adam McLean, two members of the N.E.W. board of directors, were very excited about the first event of the season. The startup N.E.W. organization is all about the racers and putting on the best show for the fans. Racers came in from New Hampshire, Canada, Pennsylvania and all over New York.
The weather was nice on Saturday, and the smell of 2-stroke exhaust was in the air as the fans started to arrive. The weekend race schedule consisted of drags and ovals, a total of 10 classes and two amateur drags. With a mix of new racers and veteran racers (such as Jason Guy), the fans were in for a great first day of racing, plus the chance to browse the wares of vendors at a little swap meet.
The warm weather continued on Sunday, and excitement was in the air for the racers. All the sleds that spent the night with the fish had been recovered, fixed up and made ready to race. Jay Tweedie was even there with his Flyboard powered by his PWC. The day's racing schedule featured the same number of classes. There were a few more spectators and a few more vendors (like Sledfreak, which we all know is a huge supporter of watercross and snowmobiling in general). All told, the event featured 46 participants, six vendors and hosted over 600 spectators on both days.
Jason Guy went home the big winner, and Seth Smith placed in the top three of almost every class he entered. For a complete list of results, click here.
This event was a huge success for both DVRR and the members of N.E.W., and both organizations are working on hosting future events. Keep an eye on their websites and social media sites for updates.
